A spokesperson of Uttar Pradesh Government said on Thursday that the state government will soon be distributing Rs. 267.30 crore among 89,100 meritorious girl students. The amount will be distributed among the girl students under the Kanya Vidya Dhan Yojana scheme. The amendment has been done by the Samajwadi Party and they will include all the deserving pass out girl students of class 12th. The scheme now covers the girl students of Central Board of Secondary Education, Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, UP Madarasa Council and UP Sanskrit Education Council. Earlier, it was only meant for UP Board students.

This happened after Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav instructed the officials to launch a drive under this scheme. This scheme is set to benefit the meritorious girl students. All the girl students who have performed well in their equivalent examinations will be given a cheque of Rs. 30,000 each. The programmes with respect to this initiative will be held at the district and tehsil headquarters on August 16 & 17 and could be touted as a Rakshabandhan gift from the government.

Schemes like these are very much required in a country like India where girls, after a certain age does not get a chance to study. In the past as well, schemes focusing on the education of girls have come up. One of them is National Scheme of Incentives to Girls for Secondary Education. This scheme is about promoting the enrolment of the girl child between the age group of 14-18. The main aim of this scheme is to motivate and encourage the secondary education of girls. In this scheme, a sum of around Rs. 30,000 will be deposited in the name of the eligible girl. As the girl turns 18, she has the right to withdraw the amount along with the interest.

Sukanya Samridhi Scheme also aims at encouraging people to save for girl child’s education and marriage. It has been seen that from time to time the government has been coming up with various initiatives for the girl child and is a much-needed effort from the government’s end.
