UP Board Exams from mid-March, Final Schedule soon

The announcement of the Assembly Elections dates for the Uttar Pradesh State has quashed the proposed schedule of the State Board Examinations. The State goes for voting in seven-phased elections from 11 February to 8 March, while the counting of votes would be done on 11 March. It is only after 11th March that the Education Board can commence the annual board exams for 10th & 12th Class.

The Election Commission of India had earlier sought the probable schedule of annual board examination from Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP), to which the Parishad had proposed on December 8 that the UP Board Exams 2017 shall be held from 16 February to 20 March.

The Uttar Pradesh Board exams are likely to commence from 16 March as there will be a three-day holiday for Holi festival which will be celebrated on 13 March. One Board Official told ToI, “Exams have been pushed ahead of the usual schedule and will be held anytime after 14 March, most likely from 16 March.” This schedule is likely to affect the 12th Class Science Stream students the most as the prestigious engineering entrance exam (JEE Main) will be held in April. The final schedule is expected to be announced within a week.

Keeping the interest of students taking the Board exams, the UPMSP is likely to maintain enough gap in between important subject papers and hence the exams may continue for one month. This might also affect the result declaration, which must be done on or before 31 May as per the discussions held between HRD Ministry and State Education Boards in 2015. Last year, the 12th Board exams were concluded on 21 March, while the results were declared on 15 May. Subsequently, this may also lead to the commencement of academic session 2017-18.

A little above 6 million students are going to take the UP Board Exam 2017 as the statistical report says 3.4 million students have registered for Class 10th exams, while 2.62 million are registered for Class 12th. The number of registrations has fallen down by almost 8 lakh as a total of 68,21,869 students were registered for Board exams in 2016 (37.4 lakh for 10th Class, 30.7 lakh for 12th Class).
