It seems that the proposed schedule for UP Board examination will be changed if the Election Commission goes its way. Earlier, the Election Commission (ECI) had asked for the probable schedule from the Education department. The Board had just today announced that the annual examination for 2016-17 academic year will be conducted from February 16. While the news was doing rounds that the Election Commission has put the UP Board exam schedule on hold, Patrika has reported that no such order was issued.
Talking to Patrika, Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer T Venkatesh said that the Commission has not issued any order on stay of Uttar Pradesh Board examination. He further said that the issue might be discussed in tomorrow’s meeting, however, the Commission has not put any hold on the proposed schedule by UPMSP.
Explaining this, UP Board Secretary Shail Yadav had said, “ECI had sought probable exam schedule from us and we have communicated to them.” It is a general practice followed by the ECI in those states where the Assembly elections are approaching. ECI consults various departments including education before announcing the poll dates. As the teachers are given duty both for the board exams as well as Elections, it is quite necessary that the two do not fall in the same period.
UP Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) had announced that Class 10th and 12th board exams would commence from February 16 and while the Class 10th exam would be completed in 19 days, the Class 12th exam would take another 2 weeks. Though the complete date sheet is yet to follow, but as proposed, the last exam for Class 10th would be held on March 6, and on March 20 for Class 12th. The Board had forwarded the proposed schedule to ECI and as the schedule now stands on hold, UP’s Chief Electoral Officer, Principal Secretary, Education Secretary Jitendra Kumar and UP Board Director Amar Nath Verma will meet ECI officials in Delhi tomorrow. Election Commission holds the elections for a particular State before the term of current Legislative Assembly ends and as the term of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly will expire on May 27, the polls will be scheduled before that only.
Over 60 lakh students registered for UP Board Exams
Over 6 million students are going to appear for the Board examination to be conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Education Board. As per the figures received, overall 60,29,252 students have registered for Class 10th and 12th board exam to be conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) in 2017.
The students appearing for UP Board 10th exams in 2017 has decreased from last year’s 37,49,977 to 34,04,571. While this decrement indicates the losing interest of students in the board curriculum, the figures for Class 12th are following the same lines. From last year’s enrollment of 30,71,892 students, only 26,24,681 students have registered for 2017 exams. This figure daunts the migration of students from UP Board to other education boards, say CBSE or ISC. Overall, 68,21,869 students had registered for the board exam held in February/ March 2016.
The final schedule as well as UP Board date sheet will follow soon.
