The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released a notification related to the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), 2016. In the notification, the commission has declared the vacancy in every branch of engineering in various government departments e.g. Indian Railways, AEE, Indian Supply Services and much more.
There is a total of 676 vacancies as per the notification. Civil Engineering possesses the maximum number of vacancy i.e. 258 followed by Mechanical engineering (192), Electrical Engineering (123) and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (103). All the seats are reserved as per the reservation policy of the government of India.
Apart from the new notification, UPSC has also announced to make some changes in the examination structure. Following this change, ESE will now have three stages – prelims, mains and personality test. In the prelims, there will be two papers. The first paper which will be common for all candidates will consist general studies and engineering aptitude with a maximum of 200 marks while the second paper will be engineering specific with a maximum of 300 marks. Both papers will be of objective type.
The second stage, only eligible for selected candidates from stage I, will be of conventional type rather than objective type. Known as Mains, the second stage will consist two papers both of engineering specific in which a candidate will be asked questions based on their branches. These written papers will hold a total of 600 marks.
Candidates who meet the cut-off of above stages will be called for the interview round which holds the weightage of 200 marks. After the interview round, a final merit list will be prepared considering all the stages including prelims round after which posting will be done according to vacancies available.
Also, this year the proposed date of ESE is before the GATE exam. Until last year, it used to be after GATE which comes as handy for candidates to prepare for ESE. Many candidates are worrying about the new revised schedule of ESE.
Cracking ESE is like a dream for most of the engineering students. Though it is not a cakewalk, this exam requires meticulous preparation. Successful candidates used to say this a kind of exam in which a candidate should learn to go against all the odds.
