GUJCET engineering is back; understanding it’s implications with JEE Mains

Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET) 2017 will be conducted on May 11th, Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB) said in a press note issued here on 9th March. So, after a year’s hiatus, GUJCET is back for admission to seats in engineering colleges in the state. However, JEE mains, scores of which were used in 2016 for the same seats, will still remain prevalent on some parts. JEE mains is slated to be held on April 2nd, 8th and 9th this year. What are the seats under GUJCET and JEE mains for colleges/universities in Gujarat? let’s understand.

GUJCET, the entrance exam conducted by GSEB for admissions in Engineering course across the colleges in the Indian state of Gujarat is scheduled to be held on May 11, 2017. For the time being, only the date of the exam has been declared by GSEB and further information regarding the application process will be notified later. The exam will be held from 10 am to 01 pm at test venues across the state of Gujarat.

GUJCET is for admission into Engineering Courses as admission to MBBS and BDS courses would be based on NEET scores. Until last year, the engineering admissions were done on the basis of JEE Main. Result of GUJCET examination will be used in preparation of merit list for admission to Engineering Degree/Diploma Pharmacy after Class 12 science in government, grant in aid and self-finance institutes in the state for government quota seats and management quota seats from the academic session 2017 onwards.

In case of special provisions in certain institutes or universities as per prevailing notification of filling 50% seats in Engineering, the result obtained in GUJECT examination will be considered for calculation of merit.

However, for the 50% seats to be filled under All India basis in the special provision (as stated), the result of JEE Main shall be considered for calculation of merit. Candidates aspiring for admission to centrally funded institutes such as IITs, NITs, IIITs and other such institutes of other states will appear in JEE Main.

For admissions in 2017, merit list will be prepared by awarding 60% weightage to percentile marks obtained in theory subjects of physics, chemistry, mathematics / biology of all four semesters examination of Class 11 and class 12 science conducted by Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Board in March 2017 and 40% weightage to percentile marks obtained in state level GUJCET 2017.

For admission 2018 onwards, merit list will be prepared by awarding 60% weightage to percentile marks obtained in theory subjects of physics, chemistry, mathematics / biology of XII science annual examination conducted by Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Board and 40% weightage to percentile marks obtained in state level GUJCET exam.

As per the press release available on the official website of GSEB the total duration of the exam is 180 minutes. There shall be combined question paper including Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology. Maximum Marks: 40*3=120. All the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and biology carries equal marks. However the duration is different Physics and Chemistry will be held for 120 minutes each and the mathematics and biology will be held for 60 minutes each. Type of questions: Multiple choice questions (MCQ), four options given for a question, out of which one option is the correct one. Language of question paper: The question papers of the examination are in Gujarati, Hindi and English languages.
