Recruitment in PSUs through GATE
The trend of recruitment into PSU through GATE started in 2012 when few PSUs made use of the GATE scores. But very soon, it became a benchmark, for hiring educated graduates across various engineering disciplines. History tells us that, Indian Oil Corporation was the first PSU to debut this recruitment process.
Soon, IOC was followed by National Thermal Power Corporation, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Bharat Electronics & Power Grid Corporation of India. Some of the other PSUs that use GATE scores for recruitment include GAIL, BSNL, DMRC etc.
Now the vacancies for GATE graduates are usually in large numbers. This year alone, BSNL hired more than 2,000 GATE qualifiers, for various posts.
Many PSUs make use of GATE scores only to screen potential candidates and then conduct group discussions and personal interviews. And there are few PSUs, which hire potential candidates solely based on GATE scores.
Why do students strive for a job in PSU through GATE?
When a person is shortlisted through GATE scores, there is no chance for biases and favoritism so this selection process remains free from any external factors. Then, of course, comes the pay or salary, which is quite good and stable. The perks and bonus received by working in the PSUs are also to look out for, such as house allowances, medical facilities etc.
