UGC has confirmed that CBSE will be conducting the NET examination this year too. Around 5-6 lakh aspirants take the National Eligibility Test (NET) and this news comes as a relief for not only the aspirants but the higher education institutions.
The test for awarding the Junior Research Fellowship was started in the year 1984 and later, the lectureship eligibility test was combined with it in the year 1988, thus naming it as National Eligibility Test (NET). Being the Country’s apex higher education body, the University Grants Commission (UGC) was given the responsibility of holding the exam and hence it got the name – UGC NET. UGC NET examination has been since then conducted twice a year.
Since its inception, UGC administered the NET examination for consecutive 20 year till June 2014, later the HRD Ministry handed over the responsibility of UGC NET to the Country’s biggest education board – the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It is a well-known fact that CBSE holds multiple national-level examinations, including board examinations for Class X and XII. CBSE holds some of the major entrance exams, JEE (Joint Entrance Exam for Engineering admissions), NEET (National-level medical entrance exam), CTET (Central Teachers Eligibility Test for determining the eligibility of teachers) to name a few.
Facing severe crunch of the staff, CBSE expressed its inability to hold the NET exam in September last year. Even CBSE Chairperson wrote to his counterpart in UGC, thus asking the Commission to take over the process of UGC NET January exam. However, the same was rejected and CBSE conducted the January exam.
What about Next UGC NET Examination
“The CBSE will have to conduct the NET until further orders from the government”, sources in the HRD Ministry told The Indian Express. CBSE will conduct NET until the proposed National Testing Service (NTS) is set up by the government.
“NET will happen in time – at max a week here and there. We have sorted out the issue with CBSE over the NET exam”, Live Mint report cited officiating chairman of UGC saying this.
However, new reports as of this writing are pinning that CBSE may conduct NET exam only once a year in the coming times, citing the reasons as poor response of the candidates and the burden as well.
These are the two reports which confirm that CBSE will be holding the NET exam for the sixth time in a row now. However, there has been no announcement of dates, not from UGC’s side, nor from CBSE’s. The notification for any UGC NET examination is usually released three months before the exam, while the test is conducted in June/July and December/January.
As far as UGC NET January 2017 exam is concerned, CBSE is yet to give a single update since after the conduct of the exam on January 22. As per the usual practice, CBSE should have published the answer keys of the January exam in March/ April (starting) and currently preparing the results. However, the Board has even failed to give a single clue to the aspirants about what’s going on.
Coming to the next UGC NET exam, the exam should be held in June or July at max and going by that the notification should have been released now. Well, there’s enough time to blame CBSE for it, but for now, since the Board has agreed to hold the exam for one more time, we can expect the notification soon.
