Football field? Check. Sports Academy? Check. Swimming Pool? Check. A 3500 sq. ft food court, law institute and four post-graduation courses, the Newtown campus of St Xavier’s University will be inaugurated in July 08 by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitely and steel magnate Lakshmi Niwas Mittal as the first batch for the 2017-2018 academic session will begin the same day. It is already taking steady strides towards its Vision 2025.
The vision of the youngest university in the state also includes a sprawling campus that is spread over 17 acres of land would also house two hostels for both boys and girls with a capacity of 1,000 students in each along with separate wing dedicated to library and research. The academic building will have over 11 storeys, keeping in mind the demand for academic space a few decades later. In the upcoming years, down the line keeping in mind the scenario of 50-100 years, the university will need more space to start new-age courses and accommodate more students.
The UG students will be selected on merit basis. In case of PG, admission tests will be conducted. The university authorities are in the process of finalizing the fee structure for all the courses. The university will start operations with the B.Com, M.Com, Masters in Social Work, Masters in Mass Communication and Masters in English courses. Around 650 students will be enrolled in these courses in the first year. In the post-graduation courses 50 will be the intake capacity and undergraduate courses will offer 60 seats in B.Com stream. In its next session, the university will introduce courses in BA in mass communication, MA in multimedia and animation, MA in economics and MEd.
With the inauguration of the university all the Jesuit colleges in state will come under the university’s fold. However, the same shall be done after three years when the university is on its feet. The university also plans to introduce vocational courses to residents of villages situated around the campus. This will help them gain expertise which will enhance their employment skills
Father Felix Raj, the current principal of St. Xavier’s College, will be the first vice-chancellor of St. Xavier’s University. Father Jeyaraj Veluswamy, the chancellor of the university who appointed Felix Raj as VC, also appointed professor Ashis Mitra as registrar.
