Government had proposed to set up model science labs all over the country to inspire students. The major objective behind this proposal was to create passion and develop creativeness among the students in Science and Maths. At a function held to celebrate 55th foundation day of National Council of Educational Research and Training, Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani said that the initiative would be launched through the Department of Science and Technology and every district of the country would have model science labs opened under ‘Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan’ scheme.
The minister also said that one model science lab for the students would be set up in the North East. Then later model labs in every districts of the country would be set up. Involvement of other present programmes such as Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Rashtriya Madyamik Shiksha Abhiyan would be there. It must be noted that, former President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam launched the initiative in New Delhi recently.
Mrs Irani spoke highly about the contributions made by IT firms like Google and Intel towards this initiative. She also spoke about phase 2 of the program and said that it would be started next year for higher education classes. A national innovation competition was also suggested by Ms Smriti Irani.

Mrs Smriti Irani further added that the existing scholarships given to students of class 10 till their post graduation level under National Talent Search Examination, would be doubled to 2000 from this year onwards as it was more than a decade since last revision was done. Smriti Irani also sought the help of NCERT to organize national achievement survey for classes 3, 5 ,8, 10 to furnish real time data each year and even directed NCERT Director Mr BK Tripathi to devise a strategy. The function also saw the presence of RSS activists apart from teachers, students etc.
