The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is always sweet. IISER Kolkata was established in August 2006. IISER K offers the Integrated B.S – M.S Programme, M.S Programme, Integrated Ph.D Programme, Ph.D Programme & Post-Doctoral Programme. While addressing the gathering at 4th Convocation Ceremony of IISER, Kolkata, HRD Minister Smriti Irani for the first time said the government has allowed institutional tie-up for degree programs for students across India. Undergraduate students shall now have a choice to pursue two-semester programs in foreign institutions and masters students can now pursue one-semester programs in foreign institutions, while still tied to their mother institutions in India.

IISERs have contributed significantly in the study of basic sciences within a very short period. That is why the National Ranking Framework (NRF) will have a separate set of parameters for the premier Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) from the next academic year. Also, IISERs will have common counselling along with IITs and NITs for admissions.
