September 16 is observed as the “International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer”. And for this year, the World is celebrating the 30th anniversary of World Ozone Day. In laymen terms it is known as ‘World Ozone Day’ as it memorizes the Montreal Protocol that was signed on September 16 by 24 UN member nations in the year 1987, to limit and ultimately phase out the production of manmade chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and 95 other ozone-depleting materials.
The Theme for the year 2015 is “Ozone: All that is there between You and UV”. The slogan clearly lay emphasis over how human activity can impact the ozone layer and ultimately the survival of the Earth and its environment.
For the year 2015 the World Ozone Day falls on Wednesday, several schools and colleges across India have taken initiative to make the students aware on the importance of saving the delicate ozone layer that protects the earth from sun’s harmful Ultraviolet rays.
In the Madurai Region of India, the students enrolled in American College have been asked to avoid coming to college on two-wheelers or four-wheelers that emit smoke and pollute the atmosphere. Rather they have been advised to take the Public transport. Moreover the The National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers in the college have planned to make a formation of number ’30’ to mark the 30th anniversary of World Ozone Day. The college faculty was of the view that if we boycott the use of vehicles for a single day, the students on their part in cutting the carbon emission of fossil fuels.
Melur Government Arts & Science College have planned to conduct three competitions amongst the students on this particular day. The competitions will be conducted on elocution and essay writing about ozone layer depletion and conservation measures.
It is not on this particular day that the colleges and schools are taking the initiative on their part, but in the usual days also they always try to take some or the other initiative to make the students and people aware about the hazardous problems that may arise in the future if Ozone Layer Depletion is not taken care of. The schools and colleges across the NATION have formed Eco Club which is being chaired by the Environment Education Teachers and time and again they organize “Plant Trees Campaign”, Drawing Competitions and Essay Competitions.
The District Science Centre has observed the ‘World Ozone Day’ by organising drawing competitions for school students on its premises from September 13 to September 16, 2015. Even they have planned to conduct A ‘Family Open House Quiz’ on ‘Ozone’.
A number of Schools located in Southern Region of India plan to launch a massive awareness drive to mark ‘International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer’.
Siva Sivani Public School located in Hyderabad region has planned to organise a science fair with their science models depicting measures to reduce the effect of global warming, utilise renewable sources of energy, conserve water resources, and provide solution to control pollution.
Pollocks School located in the Andhra Pradesh region of India has planned to host a quiz competition on the day.
Other schools planning to host One-minute talk, quiz contest, and elocution competition on environment conservation are: M.V.D.M. High School, Keystone English Medium School and Andhra University High School
