Former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated nationwide model science labs program “Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan” on 9th July, Thursday in New Delhi. It is a unique concept developed by Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), which intends to emphasize on the nature of questioning, learning and growing a passion for science and mathematics amongst students.
The event was attended by Dr. Abdul Kalam, eminent scientist and former President, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Minister for Science and Technology, Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, Prof. Ram Shankar Katheria, Mr. Vishal Sheel Oberoi and other members and heads of several institutions, people related to academia and many school students.
Mrs. Smriti Irani, who was not present at the program though, has said that the initiative has been taken by HRD ministry to encourage students to learn science not only through text books and classrooms but beyond it, through practical experiments and further emphasized on the fact that the participation of girls should be more and more encouraged.
Minister Irani announced that the second stage of this endeavor will be launched in January 2016, under which model science labs are to be established in government-financed institutions of higher education in all states of North and Eastern India.
RAA is a step towards fulfilling the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Digital India, which is to make and teach inside the country. Under this project, Government financed schools are going to be monitored by different Central Universities with innovative programs, scientific demonstrations etc. to develop a mentality of logic and reason within students and make them passionate about science and technology.
A book on the project has also been released at the program. Dr. Abdul Kalam, in his inauguration speech, encouraged tender and young minds to develop the tendency of learning to live effectively, to think and gain knowledge. He stressed on having the habit of curiosity and being passionate for scientific knowledge, being innovative and having creativity within them. He stressed on hard work and inspired to face problems with courage and diligence.
He concluded with praising the importance of science and scientific mentality and giving it the highest value. Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh observed that young minds should be given freedom to develop independent, innovative and creative thoughts within themselves and said that conventional teaching cannot always quench the thirst of questioning mind. Thus, he said that RAA is the beginning of a new era for students of next generation and will be highly beneficiary for them.
