Be it Gujarat or Babri Masjid demolition, nothing has fractured India more than the idea of communalism behind it. Have a look at the chain of events : arrangement of stones for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, elections in Uttar Pradesh and now using students to be part of the communal politics for votes.
The two-day seminar titled “Shri Ram Janma Bhoomi Temple : Emerging Scenario” was organized at DU’s Arts Faculty by Arundhati Vashishtha Anusandhan Peeth (AVAP), an organization founded by late Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader and architect of Ram Temple movement Ashok Singhal.
Delhi University turned into a battlefield
On day one of the two-day seminar, Delhi University turning into a battlefield came as no surprise. The reason why chaotic scenes were witnessed in the campus of Delhi University are first, the varsity was not updated about the topic of the seminar when the venue was hired and secondly, all this may lead to ‘saffronisation’ of academics and the preparatory ground for ‘communal’ politics.
Yet the Seminar Kick-Started….
Amidst all such protests senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party Subramanian Swamy went ahead with a seminar on the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The protesting students who belonged to various left-affiliated student wings AISA, DSF, SFI, KYS and Congress-affiliate NSUI were detained by the police. The police camped outside the gate to disallow protesting students to enter the seminar venue where several high-profile right-wing leaders and members were participating.
Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy in his inaugural address at the two-day seminar, termed the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya as ‘mandatory for the revival of our culture’. He lashed out at those opposing a seminar on Ram Janmabhoomi in Delhi University campus and dubbed them as ‘intolerant’. He asserted that nothing will be done forcibly or against the law.
The speakers at the seminar extolled the virtues and significance of the birthplace of Hindu God Ram and promised that they will win the court. The Congress was appealed to come forward and support the cause as former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had promised support for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
Not all the students were opposing !!
It is not that all the students were against the seminar. The supporting students were of the view that there’s nothing wrong with holding a seminar about an issue that concerns the majority of the people in India. When the seminars can be organized on Naxalite movements and other issues, what’s wrong with this?
What was wrong that the agitation took place ?
There is nothing wrong in holding the seminar but the intention behind this seminar seems to be declarative and it was like something is being forced upon. If the pamphlets distributed by AVAP are to be considered, then they completely conveys the message of constructing Ram Temple without even investigating the issue on a scientific and factual basis. “The seminar is being considered as an attempt to attempt to infiltrate the spaces available at University-levels to further the agenda of communal politics”, said one student of DU.
