Punjab School Education Board takes Digital way to teach Punjabi

In this era of globalisation, we must take advantage of new technologies to promote our mother tongue.

To mark the 50-year celebrations of the Punjabi Suba, Punjab education minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, inaugurated the website for the promotion of Punjabi language. The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has launched elearnpunjabi.com which has been developed in collaboration with the Punjabi University.

The project for the website initiated in August 2016, is primarily targeted for children of Punjabi origin wishing to learn Punjabi, who have been brought up outside India, as well as foreigners wanting to have some working knowledge of Punjabi. The project has been financed by Punjab School Education Board.

With the help of the website, anyone can learn Punjabi from anywhere in the world. Punjabis can teach their mother tongue to their children. Soon, the facility of online examination will also be provided. The website has been equipped with audio-video assistance and the platform will be regularly updated. The course material is mainly in form of video lectures of 10-15 minutes duration.

While addressing the gathering, Cheema appealed to the Punjabi University vice-chancellor to provide special training sessions so that the website is fully used. He added training to use the website will also be provided through EDUSET.

In this course, the Communicative language teaching methodology has been used, where we parallel the “real world” as closely as possible and will be teaching Punjabi in a very interactive and interesting manner using multimedia tools and video lectures shot in studio and outdoors. At the end of this course, the people will develop enough listening and speaking skills in Punjabi to take part in basic Punjabi conversation. They will also be able to read and write email in Punjabi as well as chat and post messages to their friends in Punjabi on social media.
