The Presidency College is one of the top notch colleges in India. It was previously known as the Hindoo College back in 1817, when it was established by Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Radhakanta Deb, David Hare, Justice Sir Edward Hyde East, Baidyanath Mukhopadhya, and RasamayDutt. It was given the status of an independent university in the year 2010, and hence now is more popularly known as the Presidency University, Kolkata.
This January 2017, the Presidency University has started celebrating its 200 years of establishment and is doing so in a grand style. The celebrations will continue well over the entire year. There will be a number of events to showcase the role of the institution in the development of students and the state. The highlights of the event will include a keynote address by the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the 20th January. The current President of India, Pranab Mukherjee will be addressing the audience on the same day later, also conferring Presidency alumnus gold medals and cash prizes of Rupees 25,000 each to the toppers of arts and science undergraduate courses.
Several other famous people from around the world are expected to make a presence in this yearlong celebration including the former captain of the Indian cricket team, Sourav Ganguly. Some of the other invitees in the list include the alumni of the college, former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee, former state finance minister Asim Dasgupta, poet Shankha Ghosh, former Union minister Satyabrata Mukherjee and PMG chairman Sugata Bose.
The college has its name inked in the pages of history by having produced notable leaders and avant-garde thinkers such as Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Swami Vivekananda, Subhaschandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad, Ananda Ram Baruah, Humayun Kabir, Satyendranath Bose, Meghnad Saha, Jibanananda Das, Satyajit Ray, Amartya Sen and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak.
The event to look forward in this grand celebration is the Global Education Summit based on the theme ‘200 years ahead’. The summit will conquer the topics of higher education, natural and social sciences, mathematics, languages and humanities. We expect the event to be a gathering of the finest minds of the Indian soil from over 2 centuries and also a great cultural experience in terms of reliving the rich history of India, way before it achieved Independence from the British rule.
