On January 17, 2016, the body of V Rohit, a Dalit PhD scholar was found hanging in the hostel room of Hyderabad Central University. He was among the five research scholars who were suspended by Hyderabad Central University (HCU) in August last year and also one of the accused in the case of assault on a student leader. The suicide led to lot of turmoils in almost all the universities across India.
Amid protests over the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad University, an FIR was lodged against the Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Rajasthan and six other varsity officials for allegedly harassing a Dalit student. The victim, Umesh Kumar Jonwal alleged that he was harassed by the vice-chancellor and four professors because he is a Dalit and did not bribe his research supervisor every month.
Progress of the FIR Lodged
In the progress of the same case, the two professors namely: Jagdish Jadhav, head of the department of social work and associate professor Ateque Ahmed of Central University of Rajasthan have been arrested on grounds for expelling a Dalit scholar from the university on allegedly bogus charges of remaining absent for more than 15 days without any information. Jonwal had accused Jadhav, his research supervisor, Ahmed and others on the committee of expelling him from the university because he is a Dalit. He alleged Jadhav had been demanding Rs 10,000 from his fellowship every semester, and produced deposit slips as proof.
When did the police paced up the investigation?
The Police took action after National Schedule Caste Commission issued a notice asking the state’s DGP to appear in person on May 23 with the case’s progress report. National Schedule Caste Commission had issued a notice to the district police in this matter on May 2 and expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of investigation.

Jonwal alleged the committee issued him three letters of expulsion on three different dates.

There are two more FIRs pending against university employees. One of them is against the guide of a maths scholar, Mohit, who committed suicide in his hostel room in the first week of February. A woman employee of the university has registered an FIR against an official alleging physical abuse.
