A school in Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur area has come up with a unique initiative. The school is not accepting cash from the parents as school fee. Instead, the School asks the parents to plant a sapling as fee. This is an initiative started by the school for all those students who are not able to afford the fee.
‘Shiksha Kuteer’ is providing education to around 35 students aged 4 to 5 years and under the initiative started by local businessmen and professionals, the school has waived off the fee for such students who can not afford it. In return, the students’ guardians are being asked to plant a sapling and take the responsibility of nurturing it.
The parents have taken this initiative in a positive manner. They are glad that by just planting a sapling their kids are getting quality education. This initiative has received good response from the parents. If a plant dies, the parents will have to plant another one in its place. Till now, around 700 saplings have been planted though the students are just 35.
A villager from Ambikapur said, “Shiksha Kuteer has opened in the village for students who are poor and have no money to pay fees. Students are being taught in English medium. They are being taught till a certain standard and their guardians have been asked to plant saplings instead of paying fees.”
While the initiative started in this school can set up an example for other schools located in such areas, the initiative would also help in spreading awareness about the afforestation and nature.
