Placement Season : PSUs make a re-entry in IITs

In a country where charm of PSUs refuse to fade in students due to job security combined with a lucrative pay check, the decision by the Madras High Court in allowing them to visit IITs for recruitment had rekindled hopes of the students. The opportunity opened up due to judgement has already been nabbed by the PSUs with IIT Bombay receiving six registrations out of total 300 companies so far.

Other IITs witnessed similar approaches with IIT-Madras receiving four and IIT-Roorkee five PSUs so far, including ONGC. Talking to The Indian Express, IIT Roorkee’s Placement Manager Himanshu Bansal said, “We are in touch with many PSUs who have shown interest for campus hiring and would be registering with us soon.”

PSUs are making a comeback to IIT campuses after nearly two years since the Madras High Court judgement which banned them from recruiting students from IITs, the decision appeared to the court as unfair for students from other institutes who also wanted to secure jobs with the PSUs.

However, the decision was overruled in September last year. A bench comprising of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam dismissed the plea, allowing PSUs to recruit from IITs.

The court refused to direct the Public Sector Undertakings, such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), from visiting institutions for campus interviews or forbear the Central and State PSUs from participating in campus recruitment.

While dismissing the plea, the court noted that, “the method of campus recruitment has been in vogue for over a decade, and the process has worked well and there has been no complaint by any candidate.”

The Bench said, “In the present-day scenario, they have to compete with multinational private companies and other public sector units and get the best talent and one such method which has been time tested is to go to the place (institution) where talent pool is available.”

According to the petitioner, it was unfair for the PSUs to recruit students from few selected institutions through campus interview while thousands of graduates were waiting for employment after completing their courses in reputed universities and institutions.

The decision of visiting the PSUs come right at the moment when campus placement are about to begin in most of the colleges and universities across the country. Many more PSUs are expected to register in near future before the placement season ends.
