The doctorate program at Hyderabad’s Osmania University has been in the news since past years. This time the number of Ph.D seats of University is in the issue. Dreams of students have shattered when it was showed up in the news that the number of Ph.D seats at Osmania University have depleted. Sources said that it is due to rise in number of retiring professors.
According to sources, around 50 professors are retiring every year, but there is not a single recruitment process for new professors. Sixty more professors are likely to be retired in next academic year. So there is more worry yet to come for Ph.D aspirants.
According to Telangana State Federation of University Teachers Association (TSFUTA), the number of Ph.D seats have come down by 200. It has been assumed that this figure will be more if this situation persists.
There is a ratio of 2:1 of sanctioned post and regular faculty member at the university. And the faculty members assigned the task, are doing research themselves and concomitantly guiding the students. So the condition is somewhat jumbled. This condition is not yet to be solved while new recruitment process doesn’t come up. (Must read : UGC to block funding of universities over shortage of faculty)
Osmania university registrar, Prof. E Suresh Kumar, said, “We are planning to announce the admission notification next month. We are hoping that the process will be completed soon.”
Mr. Kumar also said that the university has contacted the state government to conduct State Eligibility Test (SET) for the hiring process of new faculty members but there hasn’t been any response yet. He also added, on the approval, the university will conduct the SET this year.
Eyes are opened for the notification of next SET. This may increase the number of Ph.D seats and eligible students would be able to pursue their dreams.
