Panjab University Syndicate meeting was concluded successfully on Sunday, 30 August as the university received fresh funds for its operations. It was mentioned in the meeting of Board of Finance on 17 August that the university does not have funds to pay salaries to its employees and the issue would be worst from September. Hence, on receiving the recommendations from the University’s Board of Finance, Panjab University Syndicate accepted the proposal for immediate release of the funds.
The situations arose when Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that the funds approved for the construction work of university hostel were handled inappropriately. The complaint was made to the Human Resource and Development ministry and hence the funds for the university were not released. The Board of Finance proposed some modifications in the budget, which were approved at the Syndicate meet held on Sunday.
Vice-chancellor of Panjab University, Prof. Arun Kumar Grover notified the Syndicate about the approval for set-up of Deen Dayal Kaushal Kendras at Dev Samaj Postgraduate College for Women, Ferozpur City and GGDSD College at Sector 32, Chandigarh. Both the colleges will receive grants of Rs 4.65 crore from University Grants Commission for a period of two years. Vocational courses will be started in these colleges from this academic session.
Vice-chancellor also informed that Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh had sanctioned grant for the construction of Hall/Canteen at Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana. The university would receive Rs 5 lakh from the MP under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme.
As per the regulations of University Grants Commission, the universities must take an effort to ensure the smooth movement of specially-challenged students and staff in the university premises and hence considering the same, Panjab University Syndicate sanctioned an amount of over Rs 10 lakh for the construction of ramps in various buildings including hostels, main guest house, main library, post office and health centre.
Panjab University, being one of the 100 universities selected under Shodhganga project by University Grants Commission, has appointed Librarian Raj Kumar as the university co-ordinator for the project. The Memorandum of Understanding signed between Panjab University and INFLIBNET Centre to curb plagiarism in the research field was also discussed in the meeting.
Last year Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (Khalsa College), Chandigarh proposed to the Syndicate for stopping the functional English (Elective) course. The Syndicate accepted the proposal as the college was finding it very difficult to continue the course.
The Syndicate also approved the decision of converting teachers appointed on contract basis to temporary basis and also the employees of Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital would now be eligible for benefits like house rent allowance (HRA).
