Large number of people were seen who had come to vote in Assam today, the day beginning at around 6 am. Assam saw around 81.96% of the voter turnout as recorded by the Chief Electoral Office, Assam. This is the second and the last phase of polling which include 61 constituencies in 126-seat assembly.
The voting for second phase began in the morning in Assam. As this was the last phase, heavy turnout was seen in the polling booths. In the first two hours, heavy polling was seen in the second phase of Assam elections. In the capital of Assam, Dispur, people were seen in huge number. Till 9 am in the morning, there were 15.15% of polling. By the afternoon, the vote turnout increased to 36%. Voters, mostly women and those who are voting for the first time were seen in a huge number.
Congress, which is the ruling party, BJP-AGP-BPF alliance and AIUDF and other parties are competing against each other for the seats. Though there were also a lot of disruptions as the electronic voting machines were not functioning properly, but later the process went smoothly as the voting machines were replaced. By 1pm, the turnout increased to 55.28%.
There was also some kind of chaos, when a lady in the Kamrup disctrict forgot to take her child after casting her vote and so she went back again to get her child. Some of the people standing in the line misbehaved with her and as a result the CRPF had to fire in the air at polling station to control the situation.
Another incident took place in Assam, during which an 80 year voter was killed and three more people injured, out of which two of them were CRPF personnel because of the clash that took place between the CRPF personnel and the voters. The situation worsened when the CRPF personnel asked the voters to stand in a line, which later led to heated arguments between them. After this incident, the CRPF team which was deployed there had to be replaced.
By 6.00 pm, the voter turnout in Phase 2 polling was 81.96%, amidst the violence that took place in some of the areas. The voting percentage in Phase 1 poll was 82.20 percent.
