Osmania University opens Ph.D admissions after 3 years

The long wait for 2013-14 Ph.D. aspirants of Osmania University is finally over. The university has finally notified the admission process and has invited applications from eligible candidates for Ph.D. programme in the faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Commerce, Law Management, Education, Engineering, Technology, Pharmacy, Informatics and Oriental Languages. The last date to deposit the fill-in application form is November 16, 2016.

The notification for the last State Eligibility Test (SET) was out in 2013 and exams were conducted in 2014, the admission process was postponed in the wake of protests by candidates, who demanded reduction in the minimum qualifying marks by five for all categories. After the declaration of results in June last year, 6,747 of the 10,828 applicants qualified for admissions.

The prescribed application form, along with the Ph.D rules and regulations, can be downloaded from the university website, www.osmania.ac.in. The duly filled in application form along with all requisite enclosures as well as the Demand Draft of Rs. 200 drawn in favour of the Dean of the Faculty concerned payable at Hyderabad, can be submitted on any working day in the office of the concerned dean from 11 am to 4pm on or before November 16, 2016. Application received after the due date will not be taken into consideration. Those who have applied earlier against Notification No 555/Ph D/2016/Acad dated May 31, 2016 need not apply. However, if they wish to add any information to the existing application they may do so, according to the university release.

As per the notification, in the first category, the candidates who have been awarded a Research Fellowship in a national level test such as UGC-NET/CSIR-NET/ICMR/ICAR/DBT/INSPIRE Fellowship and Teacher Fellowship are eligible to apply.

Those applicants with ICSSR/RGNF/MANF/NIN-JRF/IICT-JRF or SRF who have been awarded by national level bodies/institutes having qualified in NET/SET-TS/AP/PhD eligibility test conducted by Osmania University during January 2015, are eligible to apply.

Candidates with ICSSR/RGNF/MANF/NIN-JRNIICT-JRF or SRF awarded by national level bodies/institutes who do not have any eligibility test qualification will also be admitted directly to Ph.D, subject to the condition that they must clear NET/SET-TS/AP/Ph.D eligibility test within two years from the date of admission to the Ph.D programme.

In the second category, candidates with NET/SET-TS/AP/JEST/GATE/GPAT/M Phil (through regular mode from Osmania University) or Ph.D in allied subject or who qualified in the Ph.D eligibility test conducted by OU during January, 2015, as per UGC Ph.D regulations, 2009, are eligible.

According to rules and regulations, the university Ph.D admission committee cannot allot more than four candidates to a research supervisor in an academic year, including those admitted in category-1 and category-2.

The High Court had issued an interim order following the notification issued by University in May, after which the admission process was put to halt. The court then asked the university to reduce qualifying marks by 10 in all categories. In 2014, the cut-off marks for research courses at OU were fixed at 50 for general category, 45 for BC and 40 for SC/ST candidates respectively. But now, the cut off marks have been fixed at 40 for general category, 35 for BC and 30 for SC/STs.
