No clarity over GUJCET leaves students in dark

GUJCETThe wave of ambiguity and frustration persists among the students and parents as there are no signs of the issuance of the notification by Gujarat Education Department regarding the declaration of Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET) as a compulsion for getting admission into engineering colleges in the state.

Earlier this year in June, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, education minister of the state of Gujarat, declared that Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET) will be replacing Joint Entrance Test (JEE) as the compulsory exam for students seeking admission in state’s engineering college. The decision was taken as to benefit the students who want to stay in the state. Although, the students who want to take admissions outside the state will have to appear for JEE or other national level exams.

It has been four months since the announcement was made by the education minister and the official notification regarding the statement is yet to be published by the department. The situation has left the students flummoxed as they cannot decide a course of study.

The coaching centers have the material for both the examinations but they are afraid that it would add to the state of confusion students are in if they provide them both. There’s not much time left for the final exams which are tentatively conducted in late February or March. Under these circumstances, the preparation of GUJCET and JEE together will build up enormous pressure on the students.

In addition to this, the students as well as teachers are not sure about the syllabus of the Gujarat Common Entrance Test. JEE covers the entire syllabus of Class XI and XII as prescribed by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) but GUJCET has left everyone baffled as there is such uncertainty over the syllabus. Students and teachers are not aware if the Syllabus of Class XII prescribed by Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) or the combined syllabus of both Class XI and Class XII.

Students are worried as application forms for the Joint Entrance Exam are supposed to be out any time after late October. The ones who had chosen to stay in the state for pursuing the course are in doubt whether they should apply for JEE or not.
