The National Open School (NOS) was carved out through the National Education Policy, 1986 which suggested strengthening of Open School system as as attempt to extend open learning facilities at secondary level across the country, the NOS operates as an independent system with its own curriculum and examination leading to certification. With the passage of time, the Ministry of Human Resource Development amended the name to National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to provide relevant continuing education at school stage, up to pre-degree level including vocational education programmes.
Currently, NIOS operates through a network of five departments, regional centres and over 850 Accredited Institutions (study centres) in India and abroad. With time, NIOS has emerged as the largest open schooling system in the world with around 2.71 million students at Secondary, Senior Secondary & Vocational levels.
