NIA Officer Mohammad Tanzil shot dead in UP, NIA IG suspects planned attack

A National Investigation Agency (NIA) officer lost his life in an attack by unidentified gunmen. It has been reported that NIA officer was returning from a marriage in his car along with his wife Farzana and two children when two unidentified gunmen opened fire at his car. The attack happened at around 1.30 am (Sunday) in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district.

ANI reported “NIA Deputy SP Mohammad Tanzil was returning from a wedding when he was shot dead in Bijnor, injured wife rushed to Noida hospital.”

NIA Dy SP Mohammad Tanzil was shot 21 times and his wife sustained four bullet injuries, sources informed. Mohd Tanzil was declared dead at the hospital. “He along with his wife was returning from the wedding of his niece when two unidentified bike-borne persons stopped his car and shot at him. They were referred to the Cosmos hospital,” SHO Rajkumar said.

His wife Farzana got injuries in abdomen and leg during the incident. She is in ICU right now. Dr Gulrej (EMO, Cosmos Hospital) informed, “Mohm Tanzil’s wife rushed to Delhi, she had multiple wounds.” Farzana is undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences – AIIMS, Delhi.

Murdered NIA Deputy SP Mohammad Tanzil was not a part of the Pathankot probe team, NIA IG Sanjiv Kumar Singh clarified after media claimed that the officer was a part of the ongoing probe. He also added that it was a planned attack.

UP Police, STF and ATS are investigating the matter. NIA team reached the Moradabad hospital where body of NIA official is kept while NIA DG has also left for Moradabad.

Mohd Tanzil was from Border Security Force and had joined NIA on deputation six years back. He was currently posted in Delhi and had gone to his native village to attend the family function.
