Few senior leaders of Nationalist Congress Party met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday and demanded reservation for Muslims in education sector. They handed over a memorandum to the Chief Minister stating that 5 percent education quota for Muslims should be authorized again in the State.
Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Majeed Memon led the group and insisted CM Fadnavis to follow the decision taken by Bombay High Court. The provision to provide quota to Muslims and Marathas along with some other backward sub-castes was introduced by the previous government, and a resolution related to it was also passed in July 2014. The implementation of quota for Marathas was stayed by the Bombay High Court, but the Court maintained the reservation for Muslim in educational institutions.
Fadnavis government passed a government resolution (GR) in March this year, thus nullifying the previous notification granting reservation to Muslims. Maharashtra Congress also stood against the resolution and staged protest for Muslim quota in education stating it as the violation of the Court’s decision.
Majeed Menon said, “We told the CM that on November 14, 2014, the Bombay high court uphled 5% reservation for Muslims in education, as it conceded that the community was educationally backward. If the BJP government really wanted ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’, it must give back to the community what even the high court had upheld.”
He also added that as per the Court’s decision, the resolution regarding Muslim quota will stay in force till the court gives a final verdict on the issue and since the State government had not approached the Supreme Court, it was duty-bound to follow the order.
Sunil Tatkare, NCP President said, “When the decision was challenged in the court, the education quota for Muslims was retained. Hence, we demand that the government announce reservation to Muslims in education.”
Devendra Fadnavis assured NCP leaders that his government will study the Court’s decision on economic criteria regarding reservation and also a final decision would be taken soon. He also assured that all legal aspects will be considered before taking final decision in this regard.
