Following the recommendations made by Justice (Retd.) R M Lodha Panel to the apex court in January this year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Rahul Johri will join the board as its first Chief Executive Officer. Rahul Johri has been active in the media industry for more than 20 years and will now start a new journey as the CEO of the biggest cricketing body from June 1.
Lodha panel has proposed administrative reforms in the board and recommended the restructuring of the board’s organization. It has suggested that BCCI must be run professionally under a CEO and ministers, government servants should not be a part of the board. The panel had also proposed that BCCI should separate its administration and management duties where CEO should take up the management duties.
Rahul had served the Discovery Networks for past 15 years as Executive Vice-President for Asia-Pacific region and for 8 years as General Manager for South Asia. Rahul possesses more than 20 years in the media industry and BCCI believes his inclusion in the board will help in smooth functioning of operations, stakeholder management and building robust strategies for further promoting the sport.
After getting the confirmation of his appointment as BCCI CEO, Rahul said, “I am honored at the opportunity to serve millions of Indian cricket fans. It will be my utmost endeavor to contribute to the Indian cricket. I am thankful to the President and Honorary Secretary of the BCCI for bestowing such faith in me. I look forward to everyone’s support to fulfill this tremendous responsibility.”
Rahul Johri will assume the Mumbai office on June 1 and will report to BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur. Welcoming the first-ever CEO, Anurag Thakur said through the official release, “We welcome Rahul aboard and wish him luck for his new role at BCCI. In the past one year, BCCI has undertaken various initiatives aimed towards transforming the working of BCCI in order to make the functioning more robust. This endeavor is another initiative of the board aimed in the same direction and will mark as one more milestone towards strengthening the professional working of the BCCI.”
BCCI Shashank Manohar also welcomed Johri and affirmed that Johri’s vast experience and knowledge will benefit the board. He said, “His vision, guidance and support will contribute towards the successful working of the BCCI.”
