Jammu University accepts proposal for semester system in Distance Education programs

Prof. R.D Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of University of Jammu chaired the Academic Council Meeting on Monday in which academic issues of the university and off-site campuses were discussed. In what can be termed as a major decision, the academic council sanctioned the introduction of semester system at undergraduate level through the directorate of distance education (DDE) from next academic session 2016-17. The semester system in all government degree colleges affiliated to Jammu University has already been introduced for regular students.

Discussions on various issues of academic importance were also held at the meeting. Total of 54 agenda items were discussed along with the action taken report on the resolutions of last academic council. Prof. Keshav Sharma, Registrar, University of Jammu presented the agenda items. An official spokesperson said, “The Academic Council has decided to introduce the semester system at the undergraduate level through the DDE from 2016-17.”

The body governing lateral entry system for granting admission to diploma holders (three years in engineering) and B.Sc degree (non-medical) holders directly in the third semester of B.E. degree course in engineering colleges and departments affiliated to University of Jammu were also given green signal by the academic council.

Other people who attended the meeting are : Prof. Poonam Dhawan, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Archana Kesar, Dean Research Studies, Deans of various faculties, Rectors/Directors of the Offsite Campuses, Heads of the Departments, Conveners of Boards of Studies, Deans of University of Kashmir namely Prof Nisar A. Rather, Dean Faculty of Physical and Material Science, Prof. Khurshid A. Bhat, Dean Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Prof. Rukaya, Dean Oriental Learning, Prof. Mohammad Ayoub Dhar, Dean Faculty of Law, Prof. N.A Shah, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Mehmood Ahmad Khan, Dean Faculty of Education, Prof. G. M Bhat, Dean Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Ashraf Wani, Dean Faculty of Music and Fine Arts,College Principals and other officials.

As per the recommendations of the Justice Verma Commission and National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education (NCFTE), academic council also gave signal to the statutes and scheme for B.P.Ed. and M.P.Ed. courses.

As of now the proposal regarding creation of a post of Dean, Planning and Development has been accepted in lieu that it will undergo further developments and amendments. This was also one among the important issues that were discussed in the academic council.
