Jamia Millia Islamic University was established in 1920 at Aligarh that became a Central University under Act of India Parliament in 1988. In Urdu, Jamia means ‘University’ and Millia means ‘National’. The University offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Since its establishment in 1920, the university has historical importance as many of the freedom fighters were in the founding committee. In 1962, University Grant Commission (UGC) declared this university as a ‘deemed to university’.

In recent news article, as published on Tuesday, Jamia Millia University has announced 10 percent increase in the course fee applicable from academic session 2015-16 to all the courses offered. According to university vice-chancellor “It is just a nominal increase in course fee”. As per University information, this hike in course fee had been made after three years.
Students’ agitation towards the decision
Students are very much disappointed by the university decision to rise course fee. According to them, many students are not even required to use the equipment provided by the university. Some courses offered by university are based only on theoretical classes. There is no need of practical in such courses and thus university has no right to increase course fee uniformly for all courses. Many of the students belong to weaker section of society and even paying for current course fee is quite difficult for them.

However, the university is spending portion of money for the welfare of students. But the fact is that the students are not willing to pay the fee for campus maintenance which the University needs to invest for the improvement of campus. Manifold questions also came up that no logic has been defined behind such unnecessary increase in the course fees.

Jamia Millia University on other hand gave an explanation regarding the rise in course fees. They said that this is a routine hike in course fee hence it is applicable to all the courses offered. Official also stated that they are trying to give the students financial help as many of them are from economically backward classes. However, such assistance would be provided completely based on merit and performance.
