In an effort to bring about a drastic transformational change to the skilling landscape of the country, the National Council on Skill Development (NCSD) under the leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi was created by Government of India. The responsibility to develop a coherent, comprehensive, and targeted and focused approach towards skill development and planning of a detailed strategy for the implementation of the services fell on the Adviser to Prime Mister’s Office, National Council Skill Development.
The APM office has worked over a long time in successful collaboration with a plethora of stakeholders including such as – Government, NGOs, training providers, and industry associations to evolve an outcome based solution for the improvement of the skill development environment in our country. It has proposed the following recommendations:
* Changes to the Apprenticeship Act
* Introduction of credit funding for skill training
* For skills development projects the service tax to be excluded
The Symbiosis Foundation, Pune is all geared up to open its doors for the first campus in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, which will be India’s first skill development focused university.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan laid the foundation of the university with an initial investment of Rs. 150 crore in Bada Bangdada area in Indore. The University is christened as the University of Applied Sciences (UAS). It is set to be a deemed university which will offer degree, diploma and certification courses in Retail, Finance, Banking and Information Technology (IT).
Leading Industry names like Reliance Capital, HDFC Bank, MAN Trucks and Future Group along with Symbiosis founder and head, S B Majumder, the foundation signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in a function on 1 July, 2015.
The “fast changing global scenario” requires today’s youth to possess a flexible blend of classroom and on-job training skills. This helps them to be at par and also promises a desirable job outcome. India Inc. has been the witness to the ever increasing demand for creating skilled youth for sustainable issues and better employability. But over the years it has been seen that the Indian Education System has been unsuccessful in bridging the skill gap problem that has always existed. With expansion taking place in all sectors like IT, banking, financial sectors, retail, manufacturing, and the demand for skilled workforce is gradually increasing. It has now reached a point where it cannot be overlooked anymore.
Therefore the “skill development” university by Symbiosis is a big step in this direction. The residential University is spread over an impressive area comprising 30 acres, and houses the academic block, student hostels, mess and labs. The course will commence from 2016. Phase I of the construction will be equipped with industrial workshops in order to enable students acquire industry centric learning and experience. Also on the cards is a industrial R&D park to impart research courses apart from graduation, post graduation and various other short term courses.
