Smriti Irani on IIT Madras controversy
Protests against HRD Minister Smriti Irani

A controversy has come into the scene for IIT Madras where the institute banned a discussion forum for the students. HRD Minister Smriti Irani divulged the fact that the organization was completely aware about the point that in case the procedures are not maintained the particular group would be de-recognized by the Dean. She even said that the autonomous institutes possess the authority to manage the rules and regulations taking the right decision. Manifold students’ group work in the campus of the IIT and it’s important that they need proper recognition that would enable to function without any difficulty. And if any group breaks the rules of the institute they have to face a ban that has happened for the APSC. Usually, in such situation they would get an initial de-recognition and here also the same procedure has been implemented.

Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle (APSC) is recognized as the group that has faced the unilateral situation and they even threatened the Dean for the negative decision against them. Presently, they decided to move on to the left and other Muslim organizations in order to continue their protest. According to the sources, it’s revealed the students from APSC has violated the guidelines from IIT Madras that’s the reason for such ban issued on them. As revealed by APSC they received a mail on 24th May from the IIT Dean for students, Srivakumar M. Srinivasan that consisted of the information about the ban on the group. The APSC students say that their ban was based on a anonymous complaint and they were even denied from getting a hearing.

Politics here plays the leading role and puts up a strong connection between the corporate field and the caste based practices. Manifold activities like those of ‘Ghar Wapsi’ that’s being organized to make the Dalits return to their original position, “Hindu Fold” has been featured as the events incorporating negative impacts on the society. In this respect, an example can be presented such as the murder of the Bhotmange’s family in Kahirlanji. It’s completely illegal if a Dalit has to face death only putting a song representing Ambedkar as the ringtone in the mobile.
