The Ministry of Human Resource Development came up with the unique idea of a Digital library that aims to save time and money of students. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has set up a National Digital Library (NDL) to provide an e-platform to the students. Through this, students can get access to the relative study material.
HRD Ministry has chosen IIT Kharagpur to host, coordinate, and set the NDL. Remarking NDL as a national asset, the Ministry is making progress under the National Mission on Education through information and Communication Technology (NMEICT).
UGC secretary Jaspal Sandhu forwarded a letter to all central universities and colleges asking students to register on NDL portal- https://ndl.iitkgp.ac.in. In the letter, it was stated that the sole objective of the project is to aggrandize the digital content all over the internet. Learners from primary education to higher education will get an e-access to study related content from the site.
On the portal, there are currently 1,493,722 items distributed in a different type of categories. Currently, there are only 3 languages but it would soon be available in more than 70 languages. The sources at NDL portal is very wide ranging from the basic reading content of NCERT to engineering lecture of NPTEL. The sources also include some arcane content like KrishiKosh- knowledge about agriculture, Shodhganga a reservoir of Indian Thesis.
While India is moving in the direction of digitalization in every field, the concept of Digital Library is a meaningful path in the area of education. With this initiative, a student would not have to open multiple tabs for engineering videos, would not have to search for free pdf of books, various examination aspirants would not have to buy NCERT books for past reference, instead this all would be possible through a single platform.
