Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani announced the decision of shutting down IIIT Amethi and that the campus of institute would be used to run another educational institution. Established in 2005 as an extension campus of Indian Institute of Information Technology – Allahabad, the Amethi campus was named as Rajiv Gandhi IIIT. As per the latest news, Irani said at a meeting in Amethi that satellite campus of Babaseheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow would be opened on the existing campus. The admissions for new campus will begin from June 1 and classes will commence from August 1.
Smriti Irani made the announcement from a function organized by Bhaorao Deoras Sewa Nyas organized at Vidya Bharati in Amethi. Later, the minister said the same on IIIT campus in Amethi. All existing students of the IIIT will be shifted to Allahabad campus, she added.
IIIT Amethi started its journey during the tenure of UPA-II and it was one of the prime projects of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. Last year, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and HRD Minister Smriti Irani engaged in a war of words after Priyanka alleged that the Union minister was not setting up an IIIT in her mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s constituency of Rae Bareli. Irani hit back, saying Priyanka has not done her ‘homework’.
When Priyanka slammed Irani saying why wasn’t she getting an IIIT for Amethi to address the problem of unemployment. Smriti Irani said, “There is an off campus of IIIT Allahabad in Amethi. What is astounding is that while the Gandhi family has ruled the bastion for 60 years, they have done absolutely nothing… And now, a winning candidate (Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi) is asking a losing candidate to develop his constituency – which his family has been reigning over for over 60 years.”
While addressing the gathering, HRD Minister Irani said that there was no point of fooling the people, “After an inquiry, I came to know that all facilities at the IIIT were running on papers. Locals of Amethi, Rae Bareli and Sultanpur were not benefiting from it.”
During the initial phase, the satellite campus of the BBAU would have undergraduate courses BA and B.Com. along with vocation skill development courses under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. Under the program around 5000 youths of Amethi will be trained. Multinational automobile companies like Jaguar and Land Rover are expected to impart training to youths of Amethi in Amethi itself. She also made the announcement for setting up 340 hand-pumps in rural areas of Amethi.
