IGNOU celebrates 28th convocation, 1.92 lakh students awarded degree

Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU) conducted Convocation day on 8 August for the students who had passed their Masters degree courses in December 2013, June 2014 term end examinations. This is 28th convocation of this reputed university celebrated at Delhi and a total of 1.92 lakh students were awarded degrees at the event.

Convocation took place in 56 centres all over India simultaneously. In New Delhi, which is head quarters of IGNOU, main event was organized. Former Chairman of IGNOU, Mr. Hari Gautam was invited as the Chief Guest at the event. Former vice-chancellor of Lucknow University, Mr. D.P Singh was also invited by the University as prominent guest.

Apart from Delhi, regional convocation was celebrated at the centres. At 3 PM, function started in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala regional centre, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Poojappura. Mr P. Vijayan, DIG of Intelligence and Railways attended the event as Guest of Honour and addressed the students. By means of teleconferencing, convocation held at Kaloor centre in Kochi. Mr. Rose Verghese, vice-chancellor of National University of Advanced Legal Studies was invited as guest of honour. 300 postgraduates students from various centres took part in the convocation at Kallur.

At the regional centre, gold medals were awarded to four students for their outstanding performance. For scoring the highest marks in Master of Sociology all over India, Jency L was awarded with Gold medal. A total of 1386 students attended the convocation.

Similarly Aligarh centre organized convocation event at 2 PM at Raghunath Bhavan, Sri Varshney College. Former vice-chancellor from Calicut University, Mr. Anwar Jahan Zuberi was the guest of honour for Aligarh regional centre.

IGNOU was established in the year 1985. It is a distance learning national university located in New Delhi, India . IGNOU got its name from former Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi. IGNOU is regarded as the largest university in the world with over 2.8 million students enrolled with it. It was founded mainly to impart education through distant and open education system. Some of its academic activities includes teaching, research, extension and training.
