A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Higher Education Department of the government of Jammu and Kashmir for setting up the Indian Institute of Management. The institute will be set up in Jammu. The location will be chosen by the government of Jammu and Kashmir.
An announcement was made by the HRD Ministry last year for setting up the IIM at Jammu. The ministry had also expected the state government to provide them with the land of around 200 acres. The HRD Ministry had even informed that the state government can provide the land at Raika Village and if that is not possible, then Nagrota will be the preferred place for the same.
The MoU was signed in presence of the ministers from various departments. Naeem Akhtar, Minister of Education, Jammu and Kashmir, and Priya Sethi, Minister of State for Education were present. IIM Lucknow, which is currently mentoring IIM Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), will be mentoring IIM Jammu and for that reason Director of IIM Lucknow, Dr. Ajit Prasad was also present at that time. The MoU was signed by Dr. Prasad and Dr Asghar Samoon, Commissioner Secretary, Higher Education.
According to Naeem Akhtar, the setting up of IIM Jammu is considered to be a landmark decision and it is expected that world class management professionals will be produced from this state. The HRD Ministry will also work towards establishing an off-site campus of the IIM Jammu in Srinagar. This will be done so that the students of Kashmir will also get the benefit.
MoS (Education) Priya Sethi said that it is very important to create awareness for the programme and also coaching classes should be started so that the students can benefit from this.
As of now, a transit campus will be set up in Jammu. The campus will be set up at few designated places in Jammu till the construction work gets completed. A request has also been sent to the Registrar, the University of Jammu and they will be soon vacating the sheds near the entrance gate so that space can be utilized by IIM Jammu. The Administrative block will also have to soon vacate the place. First, all the old structures will be demolished and after that, only the construction work will start.
