Mainly because, we are going to share few essential tips to enhance your numerical skills for the upcoming JEE Main examination, Mathematics being the limelight of the hour.
JEE Main 2018 is indeed an important examination for all determined engineers and architects, in the making. Qualifying this exam opens the gateway of many prestigious Engineering and Architectural programs in various NITs, Centrally Funded Technical Institutions and other engineering institutions. And for those hopeful of gaining admissions into IITs & ISM, JEE Advanced is the second examination to qualify after JEE Main.
Now, the exam pattern for JEE Main 2018 is quite simple and easy to understand. And this is where you should pay attention if you want to excel and score your best in this exam. Excelling in the Mathematics section can prove to be advantageous for you.
Why Mathematics section? Because this is one section where you either score full marks for a correct answer or just loose it all. At the end of every Mathematical equation or formulae, there will be a definite answer. You don’t have to sit and write explanations or descriptive answers in here. And that is your edge. Even in case of applying to real-life situations, if you know the basic fundamentals of any math problem, then the correct answer is just moments away. And with strategical preparation, you can be sure of getting the right answer- and voila 4 marks for that!
It is important to know that JEE Main 2018 is held for two papers. Paper 1 will be for B.E./ B.Tech., and Paper 2 for B. Arch./ B. Planning. And if you are looking for admissions in either of the streams mentioned above, then both papers can be attempted. And an interesting detail about this exam is that Mathematics is a common subject in both the papers. So, that’s one less subject if you are taking both the exams and also improving your chances at excelling as well.
The other subjects are Physics, Chemistry in Paper 1 and Aptitude and Drawing Test in Paper 2. Paper 1 is of 360 marks and 30 questions is reserved for Mathematics which are of 4 marks each. Now they are basically objective type questions. There will be deduction of 1 and ¼ mark for every incorrect answer in Paper 1 and Paper 2.
Tips to Score More in JEE Main Mathematics
Mathematics is usually the kind of subject, requiring maximum practice because of its applications and uses. So more the practice, more will be your satisfaction. And now, we have a few good tips that will facilitate you for getting better scores in JEE Main Mathematics.
1) Firstly, try and attempt the Mathematics section before others, as it takes more time because of calculations etc. And while cross checking your answers, check your calculations and step wise solutions, thoroughly.
2) Find out important mathematical topics and widen your edge here. Do thorough revision of important topics such as Algebra, Co-ordinate Geometry, Probability, Differential and Integral Calculus, Vectors, Permutations and Combinations and Complex Numbers and Trigonometry.
- Practice well from trigonometric equations and Inverse trigonometry, under Trigonometry. In spite of few questions from trigonometry, JEE Main will have many questions, that is basic trigonometric by nature.
- Basic concepts of Slope, Equation of a Line, Straight lines and Circles are frequently asked from Co-ordinate Geometry.
- Functions, Differentiation, Integration, Application of Derivatives, Definite integrals, Differential Equations, Limits etc. are not to be missed under Calculus.
- Sometimes, problems on Complex Numbers depends on Co-ordinate Geometry. So, the trick is to understand topics that complement one another.
3) Next, having knowledge about weightage (more or less) of certain topics is also helpful. This can help in dividing the revision and study time wisely on such topics.
- For instance, Applications of Derivatives, Limits and Continuity, Determinants and Straight Lines, and Pair of Straight Lines are easy scoring with 4%, 3%, 4% and 2% weightage, respectively.
- Inverse Trigonometric, Circles and Sequences and Series are the basic fundamentals, usually asked, with 2%, 6% and 5% weightage, respectively.
- 3-D Geometry, Probability and Statistics, Vector Algebra, Integration, Complex Numbers and Parabola are most common topics, with 5%, 7%, 5%, 8%, 5% and 3% weightage, respectively.
4) Revising from the NCERT books of Class 11 and 12 is essential. You may want to work out miscellaneous questions in here too. Focus on the basic fundamentals of all the major, carefully selected, repetitive topics.
5) Practice daily with previously solved question papers and mock series tests.
6) Lastly, find out good material sources for your revision. Books on Trigonometry and Co-ordinate Geometry by S.L.Loney; Higher Algebra by Hall Knight; Overall Mathematics by R.S.Aggarwal, Algebra, Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus by Arihant and Complete Mathematics for JEE Main are some good examples.
So, as you can see, scoring in Mathematics is not much of a concern. You just have to know your strengths and weaknesses in each of the subject topics and practice hard, accordingly. With a fixed marking system, you can actually plan your scoring possibilities. Most importantly, concentrate on understanding mathematics instead of mugging it up.
