Delhi University students to get six and half years for PhD, entrance exam mandatory

For admission into research programs, clearing the entrance examination has been made compulsory and students pursuing PhD from Delhi university would get six and half years as against four year they got for completion of their research activities. A soft copy of their PhD thesis need to be submitted by the researchers, to UGC within a month on completion of the evaluation process and announcement of award of the degree.

delhi universityDelhi University has amended its PhD in unison with UGC Regulation 2009 (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD degrees), UGC  Regulation 2010 (Minimum qualifications for Appointment of teachers and other academic staffs in universities and colleges and measures for the maintenance of standards in Higher Education). Delhi university approved the amendments in a Executive Council meeting held.

Abha Dev Habib, EC member stated that for submission of PhD thesis five years is allowed, which is extendable to a maximum of six and half years. The time span can be extended after proper justification in certain special cases. Students used to get four years for thesis submission earlier, which can be extended for six months.

Since the admission procedure for PhD is different for various departments, it has now been made mandatory that entrance test to be cleared for the admission. Ms Habib added further that students would be admitted to PhD based on the entrance test, but separate terms may be decided for students holding JRF and M.Phil degrees.

The number of students admitted and allocation of supervisors would be decided by Departmental Research Committee in mutual discussion with the supervisor. This is according to the amended directive. A pre PhD presentation in the department with all faculty staffs and research students for their feedback and comments need to be incorporated in the thesis and only after that the thesis would be submitted.

According to Ms Habib, in a refereed journal, the PhD students would need to publish atleast one research paper before thesis submission and proof in the form of acceptance letter or reprint need to be produced at the time of submission of their thesis. She further added that atleast one of the examiners would be from outside the state and one examiner from outside India may also be considered.
