The Congress party today organized a rally ‘save democracy’ to show people how BJP has damaged the institutions. The rally was organized at the Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The rally was organized as a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi government and was attended by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The Congress staged the rally at a time when the ruling BJP government has accused its leaders for taking bribe in the Augusta Westland Case. The scam revolves around the purchase of 12 helicopters from the company for Rs. 3,600 crores with alleged involvement of some Congress leaders .
It came to the notice of the government when an Italian court mentioned that bribes were taken as to seal the deal.
Describing the motive behind the rally, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “It aimed to save country’s democracy as states are being harassed, reports of parliamentary committees are being overlooked and nothing is being done for the masses.”
He further added, “The cat is out by the manner in which the Prime Minister last time tweeted and hailed Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s reply in Rajya Sabha on the issue. It shows not only his mindset but his strategy too.” He also blamed Narendra Modi for framing Congress in the AugustaWestland conspiracy.
At the rally, Sonia Gandhi said mentioning about the imposition of President’s rule in Uttarakhand, “The Modi government is trying to destroy the roots of democracy. We are the people who have given their blood and laid down their lives to protect the basic principles of humanity.”
Rahul Gandhi said, “Anyone who criticizes Modi and RSS is silenced.”
Besides them, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also had something to say. He tweeted, “BJP and Congress both are dharna parties. They do dharnas almost everyday. Today BJP on dharna against itself. Only AAP delivers governance.”
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also a part of the rally which was held in the backdrop of the imposition of the President’s rule in Uttarakhand and also because of the alleged attempts to destabilize the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh.
Hitting hard at the Congress, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu called the Save Democracy march as a diversionary tactic of Congress, he said the party is doing so only to divert public attention from the AugustaWestland chopper scam case.
