Upon increasing rift within the party, Congress expelled (today) Saket Bahuguna on the grounds of being the ‘mastermind’ behind recent developments. Saket Bahuguna is the son of former Uttarakhand CM Vijay Bahuguna who is leading the rebel Congress MLAs. Meanwhile, a delegation of all 5 BJP MPs from Uttarakhand and 35 MLAs including Congress rebel MLAs will meet President at Rashtrapati Bhavan and seek dismissal of present Harish Rawat government.
Earlier, Uttarakhand speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal issued notices to nine rebel Congress MLAs asking them as to why they should not be disqualified from the membership of the house as they have violated the norms of the party. The political crisis in the capital rose when ruling party’s MLAs protested against the Chief Minister and demanded his removal on the grounds of increasing corruption.
Following the trail, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi blamed the BJP for the political crisis and called it an ‘attack on democracy’. Defending his party’s stance, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the BJP should not be blamed for the crisis which is led by the Congress. “There is deep divide within the Congress and should not be attributed to us,” he said.
The main opposition party BJP has claimed that 35 MLAs, including 26 from the party and nine from the Congress, had already given a notice for no-confidence motion against the Speaker. This has been given to the Vidhan Sabha secretary for his failure to conduct the house in an impartial manner, even before he issued the notice to rebel Congress MLAs.
Congress MLAs in Uttarakhand were flown in choppers to an unknown location in Nainital in a bid by the Congress to keep their flock together in a situation of turmoil which according to the Chief Minister Harish Rawat is a virtual ‘encounter’ by the BJP. The Harish Rawat led government has found itself in deep political turmoil over the weekend. Uttarakhand Governor KK Paul has asked Harish Rawat to prove his part on the assembly by March 28.
The combined group of Congress and the PDF Legislators boarded the chopper from Sahastradhara helipad area in Dehradun, giving rise to a doubt that this was done by Harish Rawat to prevent any more MLA to go to the other side. Officials said that the fear of losing MLAs to the other side of the party, so shifting the MLAs to the Kumaon hills to ward off the danger was considered a good idea.
The Congress rebels were also seen criticizing the speaker’s notice. They also said that the speaker has lost the confidence of a majority of MLAs by not able to act.
According to the political analysts, the political fight is because of the rivalries that Congress has within itself. They also continued saying that the no confidence motion against the speaker is a political gimmick.
