The classes for first batch of students belonging to IIM Amritsar is set to start from late July. IIM Amritsar is guided by IIM Kozhikode Kerala. According to an official statement, IIM Amritsar would be selecting 65 top students who appeared in Common Admission Test (CAT) and have shown preference to IIM Punjab.
Admission procedure would be over by 20th of July and classes would start by the end of July. To confirm their interests on the institutes website, the students who are shortlisted are invited. Amount of Rs 9 lakh has been fixed as fee for two year Post Graduate Program at IIM Amritsar. This includes hostel accommodation, books and learning materials apart from tuition fees. IIM Amritsar campus is proposed to be set up in 60 acres of land near Mannawala on Amritsar-Jalandhar road.
The infrastructure and campus needs to be set up first and to get it to a position ready for the classes to start would easily take another two to three years. Hence the institution would begin its operations from Punjab Institute of Technology in Government Polytechnic College, Amritsar as of now till the new campus gets ready and in fine shape.
IIM Kozhikode would play the role as a mentor for IIM Amritsar in developing the programs and putting together process for a strong foundation in the building. Likewise IIM Nagpur would start first batch classes in the campus of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) from July 23rd. IIM Ahmedabad would play its role as a mentor in the development of IIM Nagpur.
Some officials from IIM-A and HRD ministry visited Nagpur some months back to inspect classrooms, library, labs, canteen, teachers room etc provided at VNIT. For the time being, faculty from IIM Ahmedabad would be conducting classes till teaching and other staffs for IIM Nagpur are recruited.
The official statement also said that, financial assistance in the form of educational loans offered by some leading banks would be on same terms that these banks offer to students studying in any other IIMs. Batch capacity of 60 students would be there for the 2015-2016 session.
The proposal to start six new IIMs in India was recently cleared by Government and courses would be started in the coming academic session. New IIMs apart form the one in Amritsar would be established at Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, Bodh Gaya in Bihar, Sirmaur in Himachal Pradesh, Nagpur in Maharashtra and Sambalpur in Odisha.
