‘Cheating watches’, an abuse of technology, being openly sold online

Technology is made for the convenience of students, but it has other sides too. Recently in Bath, UK, a report came about cheating watches. These cheating watches were being sold by the e-commerce giant, Amazon. One model is advertised of the capacity of 4GB that can store text files or images while another model is offering the same with 8GB capacity that can also store video files.

Cheating Watches, as being advertised in the Amazon website

These smartwatches are being openly advertised on the Amazon website. However, currently it is showing out of stock but it is available to be shipped to Europe at $ 61. In the product description, the seller wrote, “This watch is specifically designed for cheating in exams with a specially programmed software. It is perfect for covertly viewing exam notes directly on your wrist, by storing texts and pictures. It has an emergency button, so when you press it the watch’s screen display changes from text to a regular clock, and blocks all other buttons.”

Joe Sidders, deputy head at Monkton Combe Senior School at Bath, warned about these watches and said this kind of watches would provoke stressed students to cheat in the exam. He said these watches would become a nightmare to administer. “I expect the hidden market for these sorts of devices is significant, and this offering on Amazon is just the tip of the iceberg,” he said. Further, he suggested exam boards to challenge those involved in making them.

Sidders clearly declared that student caught using these smartwatches would be banned from their all exams. He condemned Amazon for selling these watches and said the company possess a wrong product as under-pressured might get lured and buy the product.

Cheating watches are also advertised on eBay or can be bought online directly from the retailers. All these causing the spread of this cheating watch. Some report says cheat pens are also available which can be used to hide information inside a pen.

Generally in the exam, electronic devices like mobile phones are prohibited but wearable watches are allowed. Equipped with the emergency button, it would be difficult to distinguish between a normal watch and a cheating watch for an invigilator. So it would be easier for students to adopt the cheating method in the examination.

If this watch would become widespread in the world, it would pose a threat to young students. Also, this would be an abuse of technology. Many average students who used to study before exams, they would also tempt to buy these watches. This will surely degrade the essence of exams as well as the quality of students.
