Lucknow: Following the arrest of two professors of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University by the Central Bureau of Investigation for accepting Rs 50,000 as bribe from a contractual teacher, the university has cancelled the entrance tests for 98 courses for academic session 2017-18, leaving the students in lurch. Till date, the university was able to hold entrance tests for 62 courses while the entrance exam for remaining 36 courses was postponed earlier following CBI arresting a professor. Close to 13,000 candidates had applied for admissions.
Following this, the university removed Prof Vipin Saxena as the dean of the School of Information Science Technology (SIST), and dean School of Education (SOE). He was also the head of the university’s recruitment cell for non-teaching staff, and was the director of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), both of which have been snatched away from him.
On the basis of the recommendations given by the decision making body, the entrance exams (all) have been cancelled. The cancellation has been done to maintain the sanctity of the exams, as of the professor arrested was entrusted with the task of setting the question paper for the entrance exams. The vice-chancellor has on June 15 constituted a seven-member committee to decide the fate of entrance exam, with Prof SK Bhatnagar as its chairman and Prof RA Khan as its convener. Prof Khan was also the admission coordinator.
From the sources, it has been revealed that the university is looking for other options for admissions. As the time is running fast, it might be possible that the university this academic session offers admission on the basis of merit and adopt an offline mode of admissions. The vice-chancellor has asked the controller of examinations and dean, academics to look at modalities for conducting fresh entrance tests. If the university chooses the latter, the academic session will be delayed by around two months. And in case admissions take place on merit basis, there are chances that the academic session will begin by August end, which will be a derailment of only one month.
HOW THE PROFESSOR WAS CAUGHT
The teacher whose contract was up for renewal informed CBI through an acquaintance that So N So person is demanding INR 50000 to extend the tenure. He also informed CBI that similar demands have been put forth earlier too before 27 more teachers who are also serving the university on contractual basis. On June 2, 2017 the agency people laid down the trap. Then man went inside the cabin to hand over the money. The money was collected by Dwivedi. Sleuths from anti-corruption branch of the Central agency in plain clothes who were stationed in the corridor entered the cabin and caught Saxena accepting the money. This is the reason as to why both the persons have been arrested.
