Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi met Anand Kumar, renowed mathematician and founder of ‘Super 30’ program in Guwahati and prompted him to initiate similar project in the City. CM had a detailed discussion with Kumar at his official residence on Sunday. Anand Kumar was on one-day visit to the City in connection with a programme.
Anand Kumar’s ‘Super 30’ is a non-profitable education program under the banner of ‘Ramanujan School of Mathematics’. 30 talented and meritorious students are selected from economically weaker section through a competitive exam and are trained for engineering entrance examination. Underprivileged students are provided with all the basic amenities during their preparation term and Anand Kumar monitors their progress.
Anand Kumar started Ramanujan School of Mathematics in 1992 and then the ‘Super 30’ program in 2002. Since the commencement of Super 30 program, 308 students have qualified entrance test for admission to IITs and ISM.
Tarun Gogoi had earlier visited Super 30 office in Patna in 2010 and was very impressed with the efforts undertaken by Anand Kumar. Assam Chief Minister had also offered monetary help for further expansion of the program, however, Kumar declined the help. Anand Kumar remarked his talks with the Chief Minister and said “I will certainly look into his request and try to help the poor students in whatever way I can.”
Chief Minister urged Kumar for taking up similar initiative for poor students of Assam. If the request is fulfilled, it would prove to be a boon for north-east students. Tarun Gogoi expressed his concern for the overall development of students and requested Kumar to initiate the concept in Guwahati to support poor students in the vicinity.
Anand Kumar is an inspiration for IIT aspirants and is very popular among students. Kumar also writes for various National and International Mathematical journals and magazines.
The Super 30 has secured a great position in preparing students for IIT admissions over the years, the result statistics depict it in the best way. The program set up a benchmark by making a hat-trick when 30 out of 30 students qualified the test from 2008 to 2010. This year too, 25 students cracked the qualifying examination JEE Advanced 2015.
Super 30 program has received global attention over the years and many of its students have been selected for higher studies in foreign universities. Recently, a student Kunal Kumar was selected by Tokyo University for higher studies. Various documentaries have been filmed on success story of Super 30. An hour long program based on the concept was also broadcasted in Discovery Channel in 2009.
