For last few days Tamil Nadu experienced heavy rainfall, highest rainfall in last 10 years. Due to heavy rain in many districts of Tamil Nadu, Anna University exams scheduled for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs offered by its affiliated colleges have been rescheduled due to inclement weather.
During the last 2 days Chennai received 246.5 mm rainfall thereby breaking the record of November 2005 which saw 142.4 mm. Earlier the highest rainfall during the north-east monsoon was in November 1976, when the city recorded a rainfall of 452.4 mm.
If compared to the north-east monsoons in the previous years, what makes this year’s rains different is that it was neither a depression nor a cyclone but a low pressure that played havoc with people’s lives. This low pressure system formed near Sri Lanka before moving northwards.
