AMU, DU and IITD websites hacked by Pakistani hackers

The official websites of at least three premier institutions of the Country were hacked today by a hackers group identified as PHC. The institutions include likes of Delhi University (DU), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D). Yes, you read it right, DU, AMU and IIT-D, the institutions that are well-known for bringing reforms in the higher education sector.

The fail point is that while AMU has managed to restore its web portal after the hack, DU and IIT-D technical teams are yet to rectify it. As per the reports, the Pakistani Hacker group has hacked as much as 10 government websites.

The hacker group posted a message on these websites which reads, “Greeting Government of India, and the people of India. Do you know what your so called hero’s (soldiers) are doing in Kashmir? Do you know they are killing many innocent people in Kashmir?” The message has been posted along with two videos alleging Indian Brutality in Kashmir.

In the page updated by the Hackers group, several allegations have been made against the Indian Army. It has also been posted that the websites have been hacked in response of hacking of Pakistan Railways website done by Indian Hackers group.

In the end, the group has posted that it has not deleted or stolen any data from the website (the DU authorities are yet to comment if any data has been stolen from the portal) and the hacking has been done just to deliver the message to the government and the people of India. The message also includes “Security is just an illusion” purportedly pointing towards the weak security systems adopted in these websites.

As per the reports, DU website was restored some time ago, but at the time of writing this report, the website was still hacked. The authorities are making attempts to restore all the affected websites as many websites are down and not opening.

It is in general domain that the websites can have the SSL certification (https) and is important for the secure connection between the server and the user of a particular website. Many websites including DU, IIT-D have not yet adopted the service and it is high time that the government agencies improve security features in its web portals.
