It was not long ago that the multi-talented Hollywood diva and U.N. Special Envoy Angelina Jolie was signed on to be a visiting professor at the London School of Economics for the fall; she has now been named a visiting professor for Georgetown University, the sister school of LSE in Washington, DC.
Few of the sources revealed that the actress would be lecturing on women, peace and security. The course, first of its kind, was launched last year by her and former foreign secretary William, who will also be serving as a visiting professor. Issues related to Women, Peace and Security have always appealed the 41-year-old actress as a passionate humanitarian. “It is vital that we broaden the discussion on how to advance women’s rights and end impunity for crimes that disproportionately affect women, such as sexual violence in conflict,” Jolie said in a May statement. “I am looking forward to teaching and learning from the students, as well as to sharing my own experiences of working alongside governments and the United Nations.”
Angelina Jolie’s enthusiasm for social causes comes from her own experience in 2001. It was while shooting for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, that she became aware of the suffering of the refugees in the war-devastated countries. She has been an advocate for refugees ever since. Being the ambassador of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie has travelled 30 countries extending help and support to the sufferers. With her one-on-one interaction with people and her dramatic experience in the field, we cannot wait more to listen to her lectures.
Melanne Verveer, the executive director at Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security also expressed her excitement stating, “I was pleased to meet with Angelina Jolie during my recent trip to London on ways we at Georgetown University can continue the collaboration between our sister programs on both sides of the Atlantic.” “We look forward to welcoming Angelina and former foreign secretary Hague to Georgetown in the future”, said Verveer.
Well, we can now assure a 100% attendance by students this coming semester as they would be equally excited on sharing knowledge by the ‘Salt’ star on the world in ‘lectures, workshops and research focused on women, peace and security’. Angelina Jolie has been very active in raising awareness on the International issues and is all set to share the same and have interactive sessions with the young minds.
