Though by the state of latest international rankings and other parameters, India may not fare well upon the world map, yet the character of the talent it produces remains unparalleled. Keeping in line with such tradition, 72 students from the state of Maharashtra have been selected to represent India out of 5000 students from other nations for International competition on Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) abacus competition in Dubai on November 11.
The competition which is organized by UC International would see participation from across the nations. The selection of students to represent India has been done by CBS Education, the master franchise of UCMAS for Maharashtra (Mumbai Region).
According to a statement released by CBS education, “Students, who have been selected for this international competition, went through two months of intensive practice and training at our various UCMAS centers.”
Further, according to the director of CBS education, C D Mishra, Bhanu Rajput and Sanjay Bhoir, the international competition would be an important step in nurturing the mental development at an early age i.e. at an age when development of cranium muscles are at its peak.
The competition which would test the skills of students in fields such as arithmetic is open for students from an age group of 5 to 13 years of age. The competition involves the students to solve 200 mathematical question within 8 minutes using abacus and tests the mental skills of the students. As much as 50 countries are participating in the competition.
India, it must be remembered, has actively participated in various such tournaments at different stages and is especially renowned for the skills and talent of its students from science and mathematics. For an instance, various Indian students from different premier institutions have participated and won medals, time and again at various international competitions and Olympiads involving subjects such as Maths, physics, chemistry and others.
In fact, NRI Indians have gone so far as to to singlehandedly won the spell bee competition in US for a number of years. Thus, it may come as no surprise if these students go in to win and bring laurels to the nation. The winners at the competition would be presented with cash prizes and trophies.
Competitions such as these organised by UC has, time and again, been crucial for countries to reflect upon the state of affairs of its education sector and test the measure of their students against those from other nations.
UCMAS is a child development program which aims to improve brain power for children in an age group of 4 to 13 years. It conducts test based on abacus and visual arithmetics.
According to UC International, the UCMAS test helps students in strengthening their mathematical skills. Their approach, as per their claim, leads to wholesome development of brain which “establishes foundational building blocks like memory, concentration, creativity and problem solving – core skills that inspire greater confidence and success in all subject areas and in life.”
UCMAS has been conducting these exams since 1993 and professes to have helped as far as 1 million children from around the world.
