In a recent report issued by the Mumbai University, the university has claimed to received as many as 136 fake certificates in past four months. As per the Mumbai University officials, the rate of receiving fake degrees has increased in a considerable manner in the academic year 2015-16.
Allegation report submitted to RTI by a Mumbai based social worker Vihar Durve seeking information about the fake degree racket. In a response to RTI query, the Marks and Certificates Unit of Examination section of the following university stated that the case related to the submission of fake degrees has increased in past few years. Further giving statistics of such cases, the number of cases, which are witnessed by the varsity in past four months is very high comparing to 2012-13 (252 cases), 2013-14 (242 cases), 2014-15 (274 cases). Vihar Durve in his report showed the rise in number of such cases to 34 in a month, which was accounted 21 in year 2012-13.
Social activist Vihar Durve claimed that neither the education officers nor the ministry are bothered to take any necessary steps in rising numbers of procurement of fake certificates in the state. He said that, “The rising trend of procuring fake degrees is adopted not only by politicians, but also in the recruitment of lower grade appointments.”

Varsity spokesperson states that, the university receives approximately 3500 to 4000 degree certificates every year for verification purposes. A very few numbers of companies, send documents for verification as students graduating from the university every year must be finding employment.
The university has received reports of such cases through letters, emails and other means correspondence from different offices. It is observed by the officials of Marks and Certificate Unit of Examination section that the fake degrees issued were from departments such as Bachelor of Arts (B.A), Bachelor of Commerce(B.Com) and Bachelor of Science(B.Sc). The officials also stated that there was a plan of issuing graduate students with the smart cards which would have contained in it the passing certificate, degree certificates as well as mark sheets. But the proposal was never been considered by new officers of the university.
Mumbai University has reported the case of receiving 136 fake certificates which landed up in the university to the Bandra Kurla police station for further enquiry. While explaining the gravity of the situation to a local newspaper, Durve said that it might be possible that the prominent leaders from all sections of the society might be indulged in the forgery hence neither the university nor the government is taking any positive actions to tackle the situation.
